Siddhartha Roy

Siddhartha Roy is currently a JC Bose National Fellow at Bose Institute, Kolkata.

He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry, University of Delaware. During this time, he developed the hydropathy plot with Prof. George Rose which became one of the key tools in protein structure analysis. He did his post-doctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof. Alfred Redfield at Brandeis University, USA. There he assigned NMR  spectra of a nucleic acid for the first time which became a standard methodology. He then joined National Institutes of Health, USA, where he developed novel chemistry and biochemistry of isotope labeling. Studies done in his laboratory in India demonstrated that binding to the target DNA sites create allosteric changes in a transcription factor and as a consequence alter the interactions between the transcription factor and other regulatory molecules. These studies established a major underlying mechanism of specificity of gene regulation. His laboratory also developed a new class of molecules, peptide-based conformationally stabilized helices, to target protein-protein interactions or protein-nucleic acids interactions, using alpha-amino isobutyric acid (AiB) as a helix stabilizer.

He received many National and International recognition for his scientific contributions, including the Bhatnagar Prize, Fellowships of Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and Royal Soc of Chemistry. He also received JC Bose National Fellowship, Govt. of India. He has served in the Editorial Boards of ACS Chem Biol and Mol Pharmacology and is a member of Board of Directors of International Chemical Biology Society. He was the Director of CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, India (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) from 2004 to 2014. In parallel, he founded an Institute of National Importance created through an act of Indian parliament----National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Kolkata, India----and nurtured it for seven years to make it a fully functional institution. He also served as the President of West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (State Academy), and the Cluster-Director, Biology of CSIR. He is the co-founder of a new start-up company for developing novel and affordable molecular diagnostics and was the Founder-President of Chemical Biology Society, India.
