ICBS President Professor Jonathan Baell from Monash University has been recognized with a prestigious national award – the Clunies Ross Award For Knowledge Commercialisation awarded by The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, awarded June 10th 2021.

Along with colleague Professor Anne Voss and Associate Professor Tim Thomas from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, he developed an entirely new approach to cancer treatment that essentially puts cancer cells to sleep by inhibiting an enzyme belong to the class of histone acetyltransferases,

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. It kills through unrestrained and abnormal cell proliferation. Professor Baell’s new class of inhibitors arrest that proliferation, without the harmful side effects caused by conventional therapies and without causing DNA damage.

A licensing deal with a major pharmaceutical company, has the teams’ discoveries at its base with a drug that has now entered Phase 1 clinical trials, and is a key component for this award.

Congratulations to Dr. Baell!
