Smarajit Polley is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biophysics, Bose Institute, Kolkata, India. He is a recipient of the intermediate fellowship from the Wellcome Trust DBT India Alliance.

He graduated from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology and University of Calcutta in the same city. After completing his Ph.D. he performed his postdoctoral research in University of California and The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, CA, USA. He determined the 3D structures of two very important human kinases, Inhibitor of kappaB Kinase 1 and 2 (IKK1/a and IKK2/b) that play key roles in immunity and development.

Research themes in his laboratory focus on structural and chemical biology. His primary areas of interest are signaling modularity in eukaryotic protein kinases and regulation of gene expression. His group takes advantage of interdisciplinary experimental approaches including, but not limited to, cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, Mass spectrometry, and relevant biochemical (cellular and in vitro), genetic (classical and chemical) and biophysical techniques.
